The First Cut Is The Deepest

The First Cut Is The Deepest

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’m talking about brands I’m currently LOVING.

After learning about the online retailer IMBY, I knew it would become one of my favorite places to shop because it carries clothes that are versatile, classic, and made in the USA. I found these Joah Brown Cool Cut Loose Leggings there and love the cuts along the knees because they’re a subtle detail that add an unexpected element.

To keep this look comfortable, I opted for my soft Frank & Eileen button up. You can find a similar style here. Frank & Eileen has won my heart because the fabric is imported from Italy and the button ups are made in the USA.

07

To stay cozy, I layered on my Velvet by Graham & Spencer sherpa jacket. You can find similar styles here and here. I love my sherpa jacket because it’s  reverisble and makes a perfect companion for my wool Superga sneakers.

My ears are uber sensitive in cold weather, so I’ve been living in my hats and ear warmers this winter. My L.A.M.B. x Burton beanie has been a lifesaver for my ears. You can find a similar style here.  These TOMS sunglasses have also been a seasonal staple during the sunny winter days.

When I found this heart shaped ring by We See Stars at Babel Fair in NYC, it was love at first sight. I’ve accumulated a collection of gold rings from my travels to remind me of the places I’ve visited. Now, everytime I wear this ring, I remember my trip to NYC.

October Outings

October Outings

This blog post is dedicated to my papa, who passed away on Sunday, October 16th and who helped teach me that family is everything.

Growing up, my dad and I would spend a fall day going on the roller coasters and walking through the haunted houses at Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest. Afterward, we’d go to Didier Farms in Lincolnshire, IL to pick pumpkins, eat delicious buttered corn on the cob,  sip cider, and walk through the cornfield maze. Then, we’d go home to carve our pumpkins and bake pumpkin seeds! What a perfect day it always was! Since fall activities hold a special place in my heart, I thought I’d create an outfit perfect for a pumpkin picking, corn on the cob eating, maze wondering outing!

To channel my inner farmer, the foundation of my outfit are overalls by Madewell. To keep my arms warm during these cooler autumn months, I’m wearing a Left of Center long sleeved shirt from Anthropologie – here’s a similar style. Next, I’m wearing an olive green vest by Sanctuary – find similar styles ON SALE here and here. For added warmth, I’m wearing this tie-dyed scarf by Heshima Kenya. The scarf is sold out, but the company has so many other gorgeous scarfs to purchase! To bring together the olive green vest and scarf, I’m wearing booties by TOMS – similar style here.

Valentine’s Day Outfit Part III

Valentine’s Day Outfit Part III

Valentine’s Day weekend has finally arrived!

Some of you might think a single lady like moi loving Valentine’s Day is just not right. But, I love the whole atmosphere this day brings. There’s so much devotion and lovingkindness in the air!

To bring this series of Valentine’s Day outfit inspiration to a close, I’m featuring an outfit that would be perfect for, let’s say, a night out at a trendy pizzeria OR a day at an artisan market, such as Dose Market, which is exactly where I’ll be with one of my favorite gals!

I wear this Raven + Lily top a little toooooooo much. When I decided to become a more thoughtful consumer, Raven + Lily was one of the first companies I learned about. It’s a certified B-Corporation, which is a huuuuuuge deal. It means Raven + Lily meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. For example, Raven + Lily currently employs over 1,500 marginalized women who it pays fair trade wages and offers access to health care and education with the long term goal of having these women exit the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families.

Valentine's Day Outfit Inspo on Hippie and Heart!

These black distressed AG jeans are also a staple of mine. I admire AG for being a socially and environmentally conscious jean brand. For example, they cut water consumption by 50% and reduce the use of chemicals and energy by using Ozone Technology in their production. They’ve saved millions of gallons of water since applying the technique in 2010.

The animal print bag by Ceri Hoover has become my everyday bag. I purchased it on a trip I took to Nashville with my girlfriends. I love wearing this bag because animal print is my jam AND it reminds me of that trip. What’s more: Ceri Hoover employs American artisans to handcraft its bags from materials sourced from the world’s finest leather vendors.

Thanks to you, thoughtful fashionista, for checking out this blog series. I hope you have the loveliest Valentine’s Day with those who truly warm your heart!

With a lot of heart,

Carly

“Fall” In Love With Eileen Fisher

“Fall” In Love With Eileen Fisher

Use of organic and sustainable fabrics and certified Peruvian Fair Trade knits and dying without hazardous chemicals are just a few ways Eileen Fisher is a high-end ethical fashion brand trailblazer. But, don’t think the company stops there. No, no, no. It has committed to being 100% sustainable by 2020 under the program VISION2020. For example, their linen and cotton will be entirely organic!

What’s more? The simple yet complex designs of Eileen Fisher make getting ready a breeze. The versatile colors and soft, comforting fabrics are perfect for a refreshing autumn or winter day. Speaking of autumn, my very first Eileen Fisher purchase was the Icon Kimono Coat in black. It’s my go-to fall coat!

Layering is a pillar of the Eileen Fisher foundation and a major theme of this weeks’ post.

Love and Lollapalooza

Love and Lollapalooza

Cox_Fashion_Carly630-59

I’m so psyched because Lollapalooza is only three days away! One performer I’m excited to see is kind of a big deal. He’s been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, was one of four members of an icon rock group, and has a daughter with a chic, ethical fashion label. Can you guess who I’m talking about? It’s Sir freakin’ Paul McCartney!!!

When I saw the “Love Is All We Need” shirt at CorePower Yoga, I NEEEEEEDED to have it since it reminded me of the song “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles. Graphic tees with inspiring messages on them are a favorite of mine because whenever I see someone wearing one, I become inspired. The shirt by Spiritual Gangster was made in the U.S. From every item sold, Spiritual Gangster donates its proceeds to help provide meals to individuals in need. In addition, they donate to other national and international charities. Click here to learn more about the charities Spiritual Gangster supports.

My decision to purchase ethical fashion has been bliss and anxiety-inducing. It feels wonderful to wear beautiful clothing made by artisans. However, I also felt like I could no longer shmy around in my favorite stores because I wouldn’t be able to find something that aligned with my new moral obligation. I didn’t want my decision to purchase ethical fashion to ruin the fun in shopping. So, I visited one of my favorite stores CUSP. There I found this grecian-insired, asymmetrical skirt by Helmut Lang. I was ecstatic to see that the label read, “Made in USA.” Sold!

A few months ago, and unbeknownst to me, I was entered into a sweepstake created by ethical fashion brand Raven and Lily because of a recent purchase I had made on the company’s online store. I won! The winnings included an adorable clutch, three bangles, a pair of earrings, a journal, and soap. Featured in this post are the clutch, a pair of bangles, and earrings. It looks like buying ethically-made fashion pays off!
